Laptop Overheating? How to Cool It Down Fast Print

  • 0

An overheating laptop runs slow, gets loud, and can shut down suddenly. Here's how to bring the temperature back down and keep it there.

1
Move to a hard, flat surface
Beds, couches, and laps block the air vents. Use a desk or table so the fans can breathe.
2
Clear the vents of dust
With the laptop off, use a short burst of compressed air on the intake and exhaust vents. Dust buildup is the most common cause.
3
Close resource-heavy apps
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, sort by CPU, and close anything pinning your processor at high usage.
4
Check for background updates
Windows Update and cloud sync can spike the CPU. Let them finish, or pause them temporarily.
5
Raise the back of the laptop
A cooling pad or even a small book under the rear improves airflow and drops temperatures several degrees.
6
Set the power mode to Balanced
Settings → System → Power → choose Balanced instead of Best Performance to reduce heat.
Tip: Occasional fan noise under heavy load is normal. Constant loud fans at idle usually mean it's time to clean the vents.
